“First Person Friday” will feature an asset we’ve created specifically in the first person perspective. First person is extremely important when modeling weapons. The asset is integral in how the player views the action through the eyes of the character, thus it’s important to place certain details in first person. We like to exaggerate certain texture and modeling details for visual fidelity when the asset is in the in game first person field of view.
This weapon is called the UZI, created for an unannounced project. The UZI derives from a family of Israeli open-bolt, blowback-operated submachine guns. For this asset, we strived for a clean look with not too much exterior damage; however, extra emphasis was placed on subtlety capturing the realism of modern weapons and how they age.
Visual storytelling was important in the development, with adding subtle colored metal accents for extra interest, slight scuffing around areas of motion, and light dusting in crevices. As well as refining the distinction between the materials, to define plastics and metals and the way they react to light. The #Firstperson perspective on 3D models truly is its own artform.
