Texture Tuesday / Today we're showcasing an AKM weapon we created for an unannounced project in 2018.
This AKM (Automatic Rifle Modernized) features a railed handguard for use with various attachments. When modeling this asset, accuracy was very important to us since it's such a common weapon. When it came to texturing, we tried to use extra wear and tear and on purposeful exaggeration of key areas on the receiver and the stained wood furniture.
Notice the subtle shape buildup on the rear of the receiver where it transitions to the wood stock, as well as the subtle dings and dents on the dust cover. It's very easy to overdo the wear and tear on weapons, leading to things not looking realistic or believable. In hindsight we probably still went a bit overboard on some of the edge work, but this asset is over 2 years old now, so it’s a great example of how we're constantly improving as a team.
